Make a New Normal

It doesn’t count as the right thing

If you stop doing it for other reasons.

Our recycling center has stopped taking glass. A sign posted on the locked dumpster said:

Due to a drop in demand, we will not be taking glass for the foreseeable future.

Now the dumpsters are gone entirely.

I understand that “free” recycling is paid for by the selling of raw materials. And I understand that economic changes can greatly change the viability of a service. But when a service is entirely centered around doing the right thing, the market should never close.

Recycling centers depend on our altruism, regardless of the market. Their job is to foster that. If they want me to be someone who recycles, then they need to make it so that I will because we both must believe that the recycling is the first priority, not profit. That is just good sales.

If you make me throw glass in the trash, then I’m not recycling. And if recycling is your business and our need then we both lose.
