While figuring out what more to say about John the Baptist in Advent, we may first want to address the elephant in the living room.

As we hear again from John the Baptist, we’re invited to explore his purpose (and ours) in light of the one who is to come again.

Before we read this week about Jesus criticizing this current generation, we should figure out what he’s been up to.

I don’t think Andrew is doing anything crazy or difficult. It isn’t weird or selfish. He’s telling his brother something.

John the Baptist isn’t the Messiah. He’s the prophet preparing the way. But we can see what Jesus is doing.

The gospel for the third week of Advent (year A) is messy, because we may not be sure what Jesus is trying to say.
