when lies fly easily 
we think our job is to catch 
them

these aren’t ours 
but they are for us 
gift-wrapped and labeled

and we open them anyway 
take the burden on ourselves 
to find the truth 
to be honest 
be the better person 
but we don’t sense our power 
not as a witness 
or even as a truth-teller 
we do more than watch 
and they count on us 
forgetting that truth
