There are a few reasons we go to school.

  • To learn.
  • Because the law requires it.
  • Mom and Dad make us.
  • We enjoy it.
  • There’s something in it for me.
  • If we go to school, we can get into another school.
  • A job requires it.

Regardless of the reason we actually have for going to school, the purpose of school is to learn.

If we choose to avoid learning, or think we can teach better than our teachers, are we getting what we need? We may, in fact, get what we want, though.

But schools aren’t really built on wants.

Extend the idea of school into all the places we are supposed to learn: church, work, life itself.

Learning is our most useful and greatest skill. Rejecting it, to focus on what we demand the world give us, is often our biggest obstacle.
