There’s more than one reason to leave Twitter

We called it a hellsite and a main source of news. Twitter was always complicated.

Users left Twitter…

  • because of what it was,
  • or could become.
  • Then what it was becoming.
  • And now because it is something different.

All of the departures from Twitter have things in common, but they aren’t the same.

Painting with a big brush can tell us a lot of things quickly, but rarely reveals details. Fine brushes never highlight context.

But, like any ecosystem, once destroyed, it is nearly impossible to recreate. Possible over a long period of time. But never overnight.

A week ago, we were marveling at Twitter’s rapid collapse. Now it looks like it will more likely fade into irrelevance. And “Why?” becomes a far less relevant question.
