We called it a hellsite and a main source of news. Twitter was always complicated.
Users left Twitter…
- because of what it was,
- or could become.
- Then what it was becoming.
- And now because it is something different.
All of the departures from Twitter have things in common, but they aren’t the same.
Painting with a big brush can tell us a lot of things quickly, but rarely reveals details. Fine brushes never highlight context.
But, like any ecosystem, once destroyed, it is nearly impossible to recreate. Possible over a long period of time. But never overnight.
A week ago, we were marveling at Twitter’s rapid collapse. Now it looks like it will more likely fade into irrelevance. And “Why?” becomes a far less relevant question.
