The famous question from the Sadducees to Jesus about the resurrection is particularly haunting to modern Christians.


This passage from Luke (Luke 20:27-38) is a fascinating opportunity for the curious to explore both Hebrew custom and what Jesus is really up to.

In one sense, this is a straight-forward refutation of the leadership. They are all skeptical of Jesus and trying to trick him. In that way, none of their questions should be treated as honest.

And yet, that whole levirate marriage thing sounds so crazy to anyone in today’s world, that it is hard not to talk about that!

But above all of those things is a far more challenging teaching from Jesus that seems to argue that we won’t see our own loved ones in heaven when we die. Digging a little bit into what Jesus is saying may be the most helpful for all of us.
