Make a New Normal

Blogging in two places

I’m currently blogging in two spots. But they’re both me. And I’m struggling.

If you haven’t yet been to my self-hosted site Drew Writes, you should. I’d love for you to check it out.

The smarter thing for me to do would be to move this one to a self-hosted site and blog in one place. You wouldn’t have to change the domain url anywhere, because it would stay the same. Some readers who have followed would have to re-follow, but that could be worked out.

Have you made the switch? What are your thoughts?

And yet…I haven’t. What is the sticking point for me? I’m actually not sure. My experience of both has been overwhelmingly positive. And I still recommend WordPress.com to just about anybody that wants to get into the online space at all–it is cheap, easy, and most importantly, safe from user error. You can’t really mess up your site.

Maybe I’m nostalgic. Maybe it’s because WordPress.com has connected me with bloggers I love, including some that are still here (particularly The Monster in Your Closet).

But the truth is that I can’t keep it up. I want my new creation to be the one. And I want the freedom to explore and build something and see where it leads me.

This is where you are and this is where I’ve been so comfortable.

I’m setting myself a deadline of May 19–two weeks from today. That’s the day I put up or shut up. I’ve saved it in my calendar. May 19 is the day I decide to move the site or find a new life here.

Either way, the best way to keep up with my writing is to sign up for my newsletter. It currently updates from my new site, but it will be integrated with a weekly email beginning this summer.

Have you moved a site? What was your experience?
