  • In our gospel this week (and next), we are reminded of the work and the rest; of the rhythm of a life spent with purpose, and Sabbath.

  • We treat rest like it is optional. Like we can just work all of the time. And like that idea itself is good. But it is as ridiculous as it is wrong.

  • Our view of Jesus’s transgression of Sabbath law is often guided by our own view of laws. We must remember God’s vision for Sabbath.

  • The nature of Sabbath is skewed in our imaginations, because we think we can work without ever resting—we should do the opposite.

  • This is what I discovered this summer. I really am lousy at vacation. I knew I was bad at it. I just didn’t know I was this bad. I don’t like the time away. I don’t like the extra burden before I go and after I return. I have trouble disconnecting my brain from my…
