Jesus sends the disciples out into the world with nothing to wear or eat so that they would receive hospitality as much as they offer it.

Jesus sends his disciples out to do the things he does, which, at this point is stuff that has been blowing their ever-loving minds.

Jesus looks at all of the people and he sees a whole—all of the people together—who need help and people to help.

This week’s gospel is too easily taken as a reflection on leadership, or the need for better leaders. That’s not it.

When Jesus shows sympathy for the people who are “like sheep without a shepherd” do we ever think to ask why they are?

This week’s gap between the lectionary readings seems like just a couple more healing stories. But we aren’t reading many.
