The first problem is that we cast the Bible as prescriptive. The second is that we cast ourselves with the very same objectification.

This week’s gospel offers a similar teaching that sends us in a totally different direction: that we shouldn’t worry about the seed or soil.

We have a tendency to focus on the negative. Thinking it’s what we’re supposed to do. It’s actually a distraction.

Jesus gives us a parable that compels us in ways that make us feel and think. What we choose to do with that is telling.

The greatest challenge with being good is often that we don’t know what to do with our sense of evil; and when that is us.

Jesus’s parable of the weeds among the wheat challenges us to see evil in the desire to pluck weeds when we know it’ll kill the wheat.
