Holy Week Homilies

In Holy Week, we remember and celebrate. This means that we aren’t just rereading the story or  commemorating a time that occurred. We gather to do something academics call anamnesis—which is a kind of reliving by remembering. We engage with this common memory of ours to make it real for us now.

Ok, you might be thinking “Whatever. I feel bad on Good Friday and good on Easter. I don’t really care why.” Which is totally fine. And actually, kinda proving the point.

Now, because I make a big deal about reading the whole story of Holy Week, I figure I should make it easier for people who want to follow along. So I’ve collected three sermons from the week here. Then I threw in Easter for good measure.

On the first day of Holy Week, we don’t just start the week, tradition tries to encapsulate the week. So I do my best to do that here.

On Good Friday, we cover the Passion and Crucifixion.

Then, Saturday night, we gather for the first celebration of Easter in what is easily the greatest feast of the church: The Great Vigil of Easter. So I write a different sermon for that one.

I hope you find them helpful.

Grace and Peace,
Drew
