The complicated feelings of calling Jesus “king”.


Maybe you don’t have complicated feelings. I’m not assuming you do. I do, however, because it kinda makes sense. And it kinda doesn’t.

Chances are you know that the last Sunday after Pentecost has been dubbed “Christ the King” in some parts of the church. Which does fit in that Jesus is above any earthly king thing. And it totally tracks with Paul’s “Jesus is Lord,” which is also a way of saying “and Caesar is not.”

Christ the King has the additional benefit of being created in response to the rise of nationalism. So, in a way, this something old is kind of new again.

All of this is stuff I totally jive with.

And yet…

You know that sensation when you’re watching a movie and the good guy does something unethical and wrong, but he does it to the bad guy, so you kinda like it, but you also feel a little wrong for liking it?

That’s Christ the King for me.
