Habits and Vacation

Maintaining habits on vacation can be difficult. And sometimes we just don’t want to. But there is no wrong way.

We track ourselves to create habits. Of walking, reading, flossing, whatever. To make them stick.

We also treat vacation as a special time for rest and to do things differently.

If we choose to take a vacation from our good habits, we ought to be gentle with ourselves for the time away. Otherwise, our diligence in renewing the habit will likely falter.

[This is what causes so many to stumble. Not that they took a break. Or that restarting was objectively hard. But attempting to restart a habit while berating yourself is a recipe for disaster.]

But also, if we choose to take a good habit with us on vacation, we should be generous to ourselves. Make the conditions more likely that the habit can stick.

Several months ago, I moved to a daily blogging habit. To sustain the daily grind, I’ve reduced my own expectations (so fewer eight-thousand word mega-articles) anyway. So while we’re on vacation, I can carve out a few minutes to write. Right?
