We love the idea of independence. It may be the most animating feature of our zeitgeist. It is also a weakness.
We think strength comes from doing it alone. So we demand of our poor that they enrich themselves. We demand of homeless that they shelter themselves. And we even demand of our children that they teach themselves.
That our lot in life is entirely of our own doing. Which is a total lie.
Helping kids learn how to persevere is valuable. But none should be expected to do everything herself.
Similarly, poverty isn’t a reflection of a moral failing. It is the trap that is often inescapable without help. Like from family, school, or a government agency. People almost never become poor because they lack skills. Poverty destroys our ability to do things.
Independence isn’t the goal. We never gain anything completely on our own. Because this is a society. Full of neighbors. Friends. And each one is trying to make it. Probably too much on their own.
Interdependence is way better. Depending on each other. Helping each other. Making this world a better place. Together.
