it’s hard to love without it

For a lot of people, love is about that state of euphoria we’re in when we fall in love. Or it is the relationship that stands firm against the test of time. It is the product of a storybook connection.

The thing about love is it always requires intimacy. And intimacy comes through trust.

When we trust another human being to love us the way we love them? To be there in the worst of times and when we are at our ugliest? These are the substance of wedding vows, of course.

We all hold onto that stuff as if this weren’t incredibly dangerous and frightening! As if opening ourselves to another human being and trusting they won’t hurt us were something our culture values. It clearly isn’t.

But it is the foundation of what God offers us through love. An incomparable freedom that comes through intimacy and trust.
