The Dream of GOD, a Nightmare of Privilege

A poem for King, justice, and repentance. #ReclaimMLK Share on X

When we speak of a dream,
we speak not of the hazy sleep indulgence,
the phantasm of our psyche,
but the very call of GOD
to make this world radically different
from the way it is.

The dream, a tricky encounter
of revelation. Assaults our attention
with our own grim reflection
of imperfection
that it is the white who made
a primate of his brother,
a slave of his brother,
an enemy of his brother.
Who casts Cain the Butcher
and Martin the Reformer
(the newer one),
in the same hue; replacing
a bleached surfer
for the toasted king.
To name our evil and reject it,
repent and be renewed,
is only beginning.

The dream demands
all of us
and each of us
take this as our greatest responsibility
to face GOD
and say
“I want what you want”
and mean it
knowing that GOD
doesn’t want this.

THOUGHTS: I am greatly enjoying the hashtag #reclaimMLK. If you hang on Twitter, you should read it. Celebrating the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. should be as uncomfortable today as ever. That we have failed him. That he is our pastor and prophet, commanding the authority of GOD to see how we have ravaged all of creation, the continued disempowerment we have made for all people of color, and how little regard we give the call of GOD to change the world.

Go to Twitter today and just read. Listen to others. And see the reflection we so easily ignore.
