Make a New Normal

Mixtape Monday: the slow build

One of my favorite parts about music is the slow build.  What I mean by this is the song that starts simple, soft, and slow.  And it gets you listening to it’s quiet and before you know it you are raptly focused on the words, listening for something.  You don’t know what.  And then it starts ramping up, building to something before you’ve even noticed it.  The hairs on your neck and back raising until it hits you.  Take a listen.

Alexi Murdoch‘s “It’s Only Fear”

Because he starts soft, his words at the end come in like a punch to the gut.  I love it.

What do you think?  What other songs build up this way?  What does this tell us about life and how we do things?

  1. I’ll always remember the first time I heard Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie” for this reason.

It starts softly, with a few words from Rihanna. The volume grows with the emotion, so that when Eminem actually starts in, you know something good’s about to happen. And it does.

I listened to that song a couple dozen times that day. And when the radio gets silent for a moment as I drive, I hold my breath for a moment, hopeful. I love it when I then hear Rihanna’s voice fading in.
